Is carbide non-sparking?

Tungsten carbide is not considered a non-sparking material. Although it is an extremely hard, dense, and highly wear-resistant material widely used in cutting tools, drilling equipment, and industrial abrasives, it can still generate sparks when struck, impacted, or abraded against other hard surfaces. In some cases, due to its hardness and interaction with steel or other metals, the contact may even produce high-energy sparks or hot particles.

While tungsten carbide performs exceptionally well in terms of durability and cutting efficiency, its spark-generating potential means it is not suitable for use in hazardous environments where flammable gases, vapours, or combustible dust may be present. In such conditions, materials specifically designed for non-sparking performance, such as aluminum bronze or beryllium bronze, are required.

Therefore, despite its excellent mechanical properties, tungsten carbide is not classified as a non-sparking material and should not be used as a substitute in explosive atmospheres.
