Are stainless steel tools non-sparking?
No, stainless steel does not come under non-sparking materials. Although stainless steel is corrosion-resistant, strong, and widely used for its durability and hygienic properties, it is still an iron-based (ferrous) alloy. Because of this composition, stainless steel can generate sparks or hot metal particles when struck, impacted, or abraded against other hard surfaces. While these sparks may not be critical in normal working environments, they can become a serious ignition risk in hazardous areas where flammable gases, vapours, or combustible dust are present. Therefore, stainless steel tools are not classified as non-sparking tools and should not be used as a substitute for purpose-designed non-sparking tools in explosive atmospheres.
